Anecdotes of a Flaneur in Shanghai

This street photography project began as a way of understanding the activities of the city and the behaviors that inhabit a place outside my own culture. It moves between speed and slowness, complexity and simplicity, through the experience of getting lost in order to discover a new place.

The essay opens through drifting. Rather than describing the city from a stable distance, it follows the wandering body as it learns to read crossings, pauses, routines, and thresholds that only become visible once direction begins to loosen.

A city learned by walking
The final image does not conclude the walk so much as hold it open. The city remains unresolved, understood through fragments, movement, and the patient act of paying attention while moving through unfamiliar ground.
